Imagine the incredible bravery it takes for a seven-year-old boy to swim for an hour against a powerful river current to save his sister and get help for his father. This is exactly what Chase Poust achieved during a family outing on Memorial Day weekend.
The Incident
Chase, his father Steven, and his four-year-old sister Abigail were enjoying a boat trip along the St. Johns River in Jacksonville, Florida. While Steven was occupied with fishing, the children were happily swimming nearby. However, the situation turned perilous when Abigail, who was wearing a life jacket, was swept away by the unexpectedly strong current.
Chase’s Heroic Rescue
Without hesitation, Chase abandoned the boat and leaped into the water to rescue his sister. Although he didn’t have a life jacket, his determination to save Abigail drove him to act. In a recent interview, Chase recounted his experience: “The current was so strong that my sister let go of the boat. So, I let go of the boat and grabbed her, and then, I was stuck.”
Chase displayed remarkable resilience, battling against the powerful current with each stroke. He swam for an hour, alternating between doggie paddling and floating on his back to conserve energy. Exhausted but resolute, Chase eventually reached the shore and immediately sought help.
The Rescue
Once on land, Chase quickly ran to get assistance while Steven bravely remained with Abigail, struggling against exhaustion. Thankfully, emergency responders from the Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission acted swiftly. Steven and Abigail were found about a mile from their boat, and the family was soon reunited.
A Community’s Relief
At a news conference following the rescue, a spokesperson from the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department expressed their relief and gratitude: “We couldn’t ask for a better outcome. We had every resource we could have possibly had coming quickly, and we’re happy to say all three have been recovered, and all three are doing well.” Chase’s bravery was instrumental in ensuring the safety of his family, and his actions were truly extraordinary.
